Based in the newly developed Regents Canal City Basin in Islington, on the edge of the City of London, Derek Rothera & Company LLP is a Central London based independent firm of Chartered Accountants and Registered Auditors established in 1974 by:


Derek Rothera FCA - Partner
Derek trained with a city firm where he obtained all round experience in every aspect of accounting, taxation and auditing. Audit clients ranged from small charities, through SMEs up to large public companies including some of the top FTSE 100.

Having qualified in 1972 he left to work as in-house accountant for a group of design companies. Here he gained a knowledge of business that proved invaluable when it came to advising clients after returning to professional practice.
The practice now serves some 500 clients from sole traders through partnerships to limited companies all with a wide range of activities. Each client is allocated a member of staff to monitor and control the flow of the work through the practice. Derek heads a company which includes:


Duncan Marr - Partner
Duncan has worked with Derek Rothera since 1989, having previously been Finance Director at The National AIDS Trust, a grant-giving body whose remit was to award grants to organisations working in the field of HIV and AIDS. Appraising the finance sections of applicants' requests for funds proved invaluable experience in assessing the financial viability, accounting systems and controls, and operating models of small organisations. An interest in commerce took him into public practice, and he now specialises within the firm in all the ways in which we can help and support our small business clients, both by dealing with the necessary evils of the compliance requirements of filing Tax Returns, VAT Returns, and statutory accounts, and in the more proactive areas of strategic planning and tax saving. On a technical level he is the firm's VAT specialist, but more generally he is interested in communication, problem-solving and negotiation. Mehran Imanzadeh - FMAAT Partner
Mehran has worked in public practice since the early 1980s, joining Derek Rothera & Company  in 1988 as a senior. He has vast experience in audit, preparation of statutory accounts, management accounts, VAT, cash flow and installation of accounting systems for clients.   Mehran also deals with basic corporation tax,  income tax,  capital gains tax,  self assessment tax returns for companies, partnerships and individuals.

 

 

Barbara Wills BSc (Econ), FCCA - Tax
Barbara's professional life started in 1984 when she joined Derek Rothera & Company. She qualified as an accountant in 1985 and gained experience in all aspects of accounting, auditing and taxation. However, having started her career working in the Sierra Leone Income Tax Department, which is based on the UK system, she decided to specialise in taxation as she enjoys the challenge of dealing with tax issues and the satisfaction of steering clients in the right direction as far as their tax affairs are concerned.
 

Gary Wong ACCA - Audit
Gary joined the practice in 2000 straight after qualifying with the ACCA. He has worked in all aspects of accounting, taxation and audit within the practice and recently was given the responsible role of running the audit department.







Aamir Qadri ICS. CAT  BSc (Hons) in Accounting, FCCA - Accounting. Aamir joined the Practice in 2007 as a newly qualified accountant. He had experience in industry and basic accounting but was determined to learn and gain skills in all aspects of the accounting profession. He was also involved in overseas marketing in his previous job and has excellent interpersonal, administrative and managerial skills. He has the ability to organise and lead by example. Currently he is involved in accounting, auditing and basic taxation.

Harun Rashid FCCA - Accounting & Tax
Harun came to us from a background of running small businesses of his own, originally starting to study accountancy about 15 years ago to help him prepare his own accounts. He found he enjoyed the challenge of studying, finding most aspects of accounting very interesting - more than he had anticipated!  He duly qualified and, after working in a couple of similar firms, joined Derek Rothera and Company in 2005 dealing in accounts, audit and taxation. His earlier business ventures help him to understand clients' day-to-day financial and business issues.

Helen Idoko BSc (Accounting & Finance), FCCA  - Accounts, Audit & Payroll

Helen joined Derek Rothera and Company in August 2006, qualifying as a Chartered Certified Accountant in 2007.  Her main specialisms are auditing, the preparation of statutory accounts including Charity accounts and payroll.  Other key areas are looking after a varied portfolio of small business clients. Prior to joining Derek Rothera and Company, Helen worked in a charitable organisation and a property investment management company where she gained experience in all aspects of financial and  management accounting.

Janet Evans ACIS - Company secretarial, IT
Janet joined us in 1999 after 20 years in financial, investment and IT roles in a mixture of industry and government agency posts.  She is responsible for company secretarial work, assisting clients with Construction Industry Scheme advice and compliance, whilst providing IT support to the office.

Mary Madden - Accounts Production
Mary started off in industry and joined Derek Rothera and Company on a part-time basis in 1991 becoming full time in 2001 after many years as a self-employed bookkeeper. She is experienced in bookkeeping, accounts production and taxation and has a good working  knowledge of many accounting packages. Mary has well over 20 years experience, an HNC in Business Studies and a Diploma in Management Finance.

Marian Turner - Bookkeeper & administrator With more than 20 years of bookkeeping experience using a variety of office systems, Marian has been working for Derek Rothera & Company since 2008. She loves the preparation and ground work required for good bookkeeping and looks after a small portfolio of clients who appreciate her capacity to make things easy to understand. Marian shares office management responsibilities with Maggy Moody and also takes care of the accounting for the firm.

 

Maggy Moody - Administration & PA to Derek
Initially Maggy joined us as a temp secretary for just two weeks. Twenty-plus years later cover continues.  Now she is the first point of contact for all.  Along with being PA to Derek she manages the day-to-day smooth running of the office.
